The preliminary and semi-final rounds of the XIII International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition will be held at the concert hall of the Sibelius Academy of the University of Arts Helsinki’s R Building from May 19–21 and May 23–25, 2025.
The legendary R building on Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu, in the heart of Helsinki, has been a music study centre for over 90 years. The building was completed in 1931, and it was designed by architect Eino Forsman.
The building houses a 550-seat Concert Hall, which is a familiar stage for many musicians as students and teachers have been playing there since the beginning of the building’s history. The acoustics in the Concert Hall were improved during the 2019 renovation, and now the acoustics are similar to the original. The Finnish Parliament gathered in the Concert Hall between from 2015 to 2017 during the renovation of the Parliament Building.
Accessibility
The building is accessible from the main entrance on Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu during opening hours. The Concert Hall is accessible from the lift. Wheelchair accessible seating is available in the hall.
